My works formal visual language has roots in abstract expressionism though perhaps with a more intuitive interpretation of a subject.
The technique used in the smaller works is a combination of beeswax and linseed oil mixed with dry pigments, applied directly by hand often adding silver or gold leaf.
The technique allows for a rough texture, reminiscent of a wall or sandy surface. This technique is not encaustic (as for example in the works of Jasper Johns), as it is not exposed to heat – rather it has a very ’dry’ and textured surface, which adds to the depth of the painting. Most works are abstract compositions, though landscapes and figures are often detectable in the works.
All works are created in a spontaneous manner, where as I may have an initial idea for the work, the technique has an innate fluctuating quality, which controls part of the process – making it a balancing act between the medium and the intended image.
In my larger paintings I use either oil or acrylic on canvas. As with the smaller works the composition is mostly simple, often adding silver or gold leaf to a seemingly uniform surface, however, the surface is built up by many layers hence giving the work depth and weight.
